Where the journey began
Every great institution begins with a vision. Al-Muhibbah Open University was founded on the belief that quality higher education should be within everyone's reach—regardless of location, financial circumstance, or stage of life.
Inspired by the growing need for flexible and technology-driven learning, the university was established to remove traditional barriers to higher education and create new opportunities for learners across Nigeria and beyond. From the outset, the goal was clear: to build a university that combines academic excellence with the flexibility of Open and Distance Learning, preparing students for success in an increasingly connected world.
Built on Service, Driven by Purpose
Al-Muhibbah Open University grew from a legacy of service, empowerment, and human development championed through the Al-Muhibbah movement and the Al-Muhibbah Institute of ICT & Entrepreneurship Ltd.
Inspired by the vision of Her Excellency Dr. Aisha Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, the university was founded to do more than confer degrees. It exists to empower individuals, strengthen communities, and develop graduates equipped with the knowledge, character, and skills to create meaningful impact. These values are reflected in the name Al-Muhibbah—a symbol of goodwill, compassion, and service to humanity.
A Future Without Boundaries
With approval from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to operate as an Open and Distance Learning institution, Al-Muhibbah transformed its vision into reality, opening new pathways for learners seeking quality education without the limitations of a conventional campus.
Today, the university continues to grow through innovative learning technologies, industry-relevant programmes, and a student-centred approach that supports lifelong learning. While our history is still unfolding, our purpose remains constant: to expand access to education, inspire innovation, and prepare graduates to thrive as leaders in a rapidly changing world.

Today, Al-Muhibbah Open University continues to advance its mission of delivering accessible, technology-driven, and globally relevant higher education. Third Academic Session
The University welcomed a new cohort of students during its matriculation ceremony, marking its third academic session since establishment and demonstrating steady institutional growth as one of Nigeria's emerging leaders in open and digital higher education.
Institutional Growth
With academic operations firmly established, the University strengthened its governance, academic leadership, digital infrastructure, and student support systems while expanding learning opportunities through its study centres in Abuja and Bauchi.
Expanding Academic Opportunities
The University continued strengthening its academic portfolio with programmes aligned to emerging industries, including Cyber Security, Data Science & Analytics, Software Engineering, Nursing Science, Public Health, and Healthcare Administration.
Building a Digital University
AOU launched its technology-enabled learning ecosystem, providing students with online lectures, virtual classrooms, digital assessments, e-library resources, and comprehensive student support services designed for flexible learning.
Academic Programmes Commence
The University officially commenced academic activities for the 2023/2024 academic session after receiving approval to offer its first 14 undergraduate programmes across Business, Computing, Social Sciences, and Allied Health Sciences.
NUC Provisional Licence Granted
The National Universities Commission (NUC), following approval by the Federal Executive Council, granted Al-Muhibbah Open University a provisional licence to operate as one of Nigeria's first private open and distance learning universities.
The Vision Becomes Reality
Al-Muhibbah Open University was established by the Al-Muhibbah Institute of ICT & Entrepreneurship Limited with a vision to expand access to quality higher education through flexible, technology-enabled learning, particularly for underserved communities, women, and young people
